About us

The Overseas Chinese Museum was initiated by Mr. Chen Jiageng, a famous patriotic leader of overseas Chinese, in 1956 and opened in 1959. It is the first cultural and exhibition institution funded by overseas Chinese in China. It is not only the first comprehensive and systematic museum to collect, study and display the history and achievements of overseas Chinese, but also a comprehensive museum with ancient cultural relics and natural specimen exhibitions. It is a national, provincial, municipal and national patriotic education base of the Federation of Overseas Chinese, a national, provincial and municipal social science popularization base, a national defense education base of Xiamen and a science popularization education base of Xiamen.
The building is a heavy eaves palace building with rich Chinese national style. The building is made of pure white granite. The eaves are decorated with green glazed tiles. The arch is exquisite, the eaves are empty, ancient and magnificent. The whole hospital covers an area of 12,500 square meters, and the building area is 8951.47 square meters. The collection of more than 6,000 cultural relics includes bronzes, ceramics, ancient coins, ancient calligraphy and painting, ancient carving crafts, foreign ceramic glassware, and a number of precious overseas Chinese cultural relics and bird, animal, fish, mineral specimens. Among them, there are 9 first-class national cultural relics and 14 calligraphy and painting in the Catalogue of Ancient Chinese Calligraphy and Painting. In addition, there are more than 3000 overseas Chinese historical relics, physical objects and a large number of overseas Chinese historical materials, as well as more than 20,000 photos, negative films and some genealogy and audio-visual materials of overseas Chinese history. Existing three basic exhibitions, Overseas Chinese, Chen Jiageng Collection Cultural Relics Exhibition and Natural Museum, are perennially open to the public free of charge.
